Toby & Victory at Fowey

To so many, Fowey Regatta Week will never seem the same again without Toby
The Town was host to one of it's favourite patrons;
......"up the hill" .... reminds us all!

Thanks, Mike Sutherland, for your team's hospitality, and for these images of Fowey Regatta 2001
The start!
Fowey Harbour Race
August 2001

Memory Lane!   Fowey Regatta Week racing     [Year?]
Kenny Pill with Toby and Raymond 'Boyo' Carne on Victory - all now recounting their racing aloft!

 On passage?
Toby, believed to be sailing with Brian Bate (right) and friends from Fowey [Names? Year?]

Victory racing in a fine breeze,  with George Pill Sr. & Bernie Trethowan Sr. on board.

1981 - Victory racing, with local knowledge on board!
Few boats astern of Victory - Peter Crapp & Feety look serious, Toby's not giving up.

And  David Carne, that intrepid Sunbeam helmsman...
Arthur always invited his nephew ( David Carne) on board for "close calls and  tacticals" during  Harbour Races at Fowey,
in recognition, perhaps, of David's Sunbeam racing success at Cowes... (see V35 Pintail )
Victory's crew, from Paul Grimshaw forward,  seemed to feel he overshadowed Toby.... but it was just a popular race for everyone.
No doubt many recall the banter between Toby and David's brother, Boyo, during Harbour races....  I'll bet David does!

Get down you lot! - We've got competition for the turning mark

Rebecca, Dr. Phil Slater, leads the 1981 Fowey Harbour Race
Toby, working hard at keeping Victory in the race... note the supplimental energy wedged behind a cleat!

Fowey Harbour Tug Tregeagle, dressed for a Fowey Regatta Week
Sea mist clearing with a gentle breeze, all making for a fine day's racing.  Barnabus completes the picture.

Taxi! - David Muirhead & Bruce Trevartha ferry Arthur ashore at Fowey (1992)

Thursday afternoon Harbour Race. To crew on Victory during  this race was a real privilege

In the lead!  One of Toby's favourite photographs of Victory racing at Fowey (2000)
Toby loved this photo of the 2000 Harbour Race.
Believed to be a photo taken by Pauline Thomas. (if not, please e-mail me)

Old friends reuinion at the Royal Fowey Yacht Club
How many years have we been coming to Fowey?   No-one would believe it!

Liquid sunshine reflects well!                                                              Always the berry & badge
Crops of Toby laughing with the boys at the R.F.Y.C., in light weather kit, after a morning race.       [all by AAC]

Boyhood (Aged 4-18). Toby oft recounted the Cutty Sark in Falmouth (1923-1937)
Old Victory (below)
Wanted - images of the Cutty Sark in Fowey or while under tow to Fowey in August 1924.(Pleasee-mail me)
Sunday August 3rd., Durgan and Perran came alongside.
Without canvas, 5 - 6 knots under tow, Woodget handed the wheel over to Capt. Millet.
Nearing Fowey, out came a motor-boat, flying the red and white (pilot) flag.. "pleased to meet you Cap'n"

Can anyone detail her dressed appearance in Fowey, as the 1924 Regatta Week Committee boat?
And, when did Toby first go to Fowey on Victory? Toby's father (Bertram 'Toby' Sr. died 1942)

Arthur "Toby" West (1919-2001) and "Feety" Spear racing Victory at Fowey

 Close Racing (but) date uncertain
Victory being chased by Helen Mary (Ronald 'Hammer' Laity)                                                                   [by Andy Campbell (1988?)]
No doubt about that being Boyo on the foredeck, with Whiffey & Malley keeping a close watch under the boom. [who is bearded, with a cap?]

 Formation racing?
Rarely was there time to photograph the competition from Victory during the Harbour Race.. without getting an earful from Toby!
It's not the same from the shore, but a joy to watch, nevertheless.[Year?  Saskia in red?]
